Stallion selection procedures based on performance

Stallion Selection Procedures based on Performance

  1. Objective: The regulations provide for the possibility of stallions with exceptional results in dressage to be approved for breeding without selection for or participation in the 70 day central proving test.
  2. Sport Requirements:
To qualify for consideration, the stallion must perform at a high level in dressage. These requirements in North America are:

    • Dressage: A minimum of 3 scores of 60% or higher at Prix St. George
  3. Other Requirements:
    • Stallion must be at least 7 years of age when application is made
  4. Assessment:The criteria
    • Pedigree
    • Conformation
    • Movement
    • Sperm Quality
    • X-Ray Examination
    • haracter
    • linical Research

The requirements as to each of these criteria are the same as for stallions approved by means of the 70 day test.

  5. Procedure:Application: The owner of the stallion must apply to the KFPS for consideration of the stallion, which application must include a video to be reviewed by Stallion Jury. The video should demonstrate the horse’s ability under saddle, including all three gaits, extension and collection, transitions up and down and trotting with the neck extended. While an unedited video of a dressage test would be suitable, it is not required that the video have been made at a competition.

Review: The stallion jury will make an initial determination as to whether the sport requirement has been met, that the horse’s natural movement is sufficiently good and that the pedigree requirements have been met. Following this initial determination, the following additional assessments are required:

Assessment of the Exterior: The stallion must be evaluated in hand. It is recommended that the stallion be seen at a FHANA/KFPS inspection after they have completed the Sport requirements. The inspectors will then review the stallion in Category 17 (3+ yr. Stallions for Studbook & Ster). Upon completion of this evaluation, the inspectors will make a recommendation to the Stallion Jury of the KFPS as to whether the stallion should be allowed to proceed.

Xrays and Semen Evaluation: If the stallion is allowed to proceed, these evaluations will then be required.

Clinical Research and Character Evaluation: Upon successful completion of the foregoing requirements, the stallion will be invited to the “short test,” normally conducted during the 70 day testing at DG Bar Ranch in Hanford, California. The stallion will be examined by a veterinarian designated by the KFPS at the beginning and conclusion of the short test and may be dismissed if any problems are identified.

Final conclusion: If the stallion is admitted to and completes the short test, the KFPS designated trainer will make a recommendation to the Stallion Jury as to whether the stallion should be enrolled in the studbook register. The Stallion Jury will make a trip to see the stallion and make a final decision. The Stallion Jury will publish the results of their decision.

  6. The Short Test. The short test is a two-week study that takes places at a designated facility approved by the KFPS/FHANA (currently DG Bar Ranch in Hanford, CA). During this examination, the stallion will be judged on his character, both stable behavior and behavior during use. During the investigation, the horse is trained daily by the KFPS trainer or his designee. Once during the study a guest rider will present the horse. The head KFPS trainer will prepare a report for the Stallion Jury.

Vaccinations-The stallion must be up to date and current on all vaccinations in the area they currently reside and the area of the testing, Currently Central California. Additionally, the stallion must be vaccinated against Influenza, Rhino pneumonia, negative Coggins test and must have an up to date Health Certificate.

Responsibility: The KFPS/FHANA cannot be held liable for damages directly or indirectly resulting from participating in the stallion examination, unless there is gross negligence or intent. The KFPS/FHANA is not responsible for the consequences of the research results of the stallion.

  7. Additional Provisions:
Stallions enrolled ‘for stud service’ by these regulations must meet the same approval procedures as other stallions enrolled for approval including the offspring evaluations and the annual inspection at a keuring.
