Submittal of articles to The Friesian

The editors will accept original work by members and non-members that is relevant to the world of the Friesian horse and FHANA/FPS business, issues, or member activities. The editors reserve the right to edit all submitted articles for clarity and content. Publication of guest articles does not imply endorsement of the viewpoint of the author by FHANA, the FPS or the editors of The Friesian.

Acceptable formats for submissions

Acceptable formats for submissions are:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Body Text of an Email

All electronic submittals must have a verifiable email address and state the name of the author in the body of the text.

Club News Articles and Calendar Items

The same guidelines apply as for submittal of articles, except all club news should be sent directly to the FHANA club news coordinator, Laurie Bell at:  farside@stny.rr.com

Submitting Artwork or Personal photographs for possible inclusion:

The editors welcome clear, high resolution images (both B&W and Color) for consideration for inclusion in the magazine, as part of a submitted article or for enhancement to other articles. The editors reserve the right to refuse any photograph at any time. All photographs MUST come with a completed signed photographer's release for a one-time publishing use of that particular image. If the photograph is taken at a public location or event open to the general public, signed model releases are not necessary, but may be advisable. If the photograph is taken as part of a private, contractual agreement, than a signed model release is also required. FHANA and the editors assume no liability in the presentation of photographs beyond supplying the credits as provided to them by the submittor and maintaining a photographer release on file. FHANA and the editors take in good faith that any artwork submitted is the original work of the artist submitting the work, and not that of others.

How to send artwork and photographs:

  1. Email method - Send as an attachment as a jpeg or tiff file. Do Not embed the image in the body of the email. Do not submit website photographs or low resolution email images. Images should be at least 200 dpi and 300 dpi is prefered. Email images to the editors at farside@stny.rr.com
  2. CD's - mail jpegs and tiff files on CD's to Laurie Bell, 651 Powderhouse Rd, Vestal, NY 13850.  CD's will not be returned.
  3. Clearly mark each photograph or email with the correct information about the image - who, where, when, photographer.

Neither FHANA, nor the editors, can be responsible for photographs or images not used in the magazine for whatever reason, or for images that are unable to be opened with the existing software. By sending your photographs and artwork to FHANA and the editors, you agree to their use in the magazine as the editors deem appropriate. Publication of any artwork or photograph in The Friesian in no way implies endorsement of any practises or person's shown in the photograph, or of the photographer.

Members may send payment in full to the FHANA office, and their ads directly to Laurie Bell, Editor. FHANA's responsibility for the inaccurate reproduction of material submitted by an advertiser is limited to the reprinting of corrected material in the next available issue of The Friesian.

Advertising Rates:

The Friesian Magazine will be instituting frequency-advertising discounts for the 2014 calendar year. Advertisers will contract The Friesian Horse Association of North America for the advertising year to insure the discounts for the 2014 calendar year. This policy reflects the policies of magazine publishers throughout the print media world and encourages the development of advertising campaigns to better promote the advertiser's business.

This method of contract advertising will give our Editor and Publisher an excellent forecast of the space requirements for each issue well in advance of closing dates. Those interested in an advertising contract should contact FHANA to implement the contractual process.

Advertising in The Friesian continues to remain the most effective method to reach the exclusive “Friesian Market”. The Friesian’s informational content makes it the oldest and most respected Friesian publication in North America. It targets both buyers and sellers of the magnificent Friesian breed and remains the most effective, economical tool to reach current and potential clients. And now with The Friesian being available to the general public, your advertising reaches Friesian enthusiasts who may not yet be members of the FHANA. Good luck and let us know what the FHANA might be able to do to make your business more successful.

Advertising Guidelines:

What is Bleed:

This means the color of your ad will run off the sheet of printed paper before it is cropped to size in the magazine. You MUST have 1/4" of overhanging color all the way around, on each side of your ad. This means the page's finished size calls for 8.5" x 11", but your ad in Photoshop will actually be 9" x 11.5". Additionally, keep all text and important images well inside the finished 8.5" x 11" so that something is not cropped when the magazine is trimmed.

What is Creep:

As the magazine adds more and more pages in the center, especially ad pages with their full bleed and text perhaps close to the edges, the center pages are actually PUSHED out and will be cropped slightly smaller then the front pages. This is because we have a center stapled book at the present time. All advertisers, regardless of position of their color ads, should keep the issue of creep in mind when designing their ads and keep all text and critical images well within the finished page dimensions. Questions? Email the editor. It is better to find out about the details before you design the ad to avoid disappointment when it is printed.

The following programs are compatible:

  • Photoshop - Mac, PC
  • Photoshop Elements - Mac, PC
